Founding of the Ranch
In 1950 Harold and Marilyn Rinehart purchased the McNamara's ranch
in northern Hyde county. They moved in 1951. For the first two
years they mostly raised sheep, but switched to cattle
in 1953.
Family
Harold and Marilyn had four children, Barbara (1950), Deborah (1951),
Brady (1956), and David (1958). Barbara lives in Arthur Nebraska;
she is the mother to four children, Justin, Todd, Randy, and Jerrian.
Deborah lives in Highmore, South Dakota; she has one son, Nicholas.
Brady and his wife Wendi live on the Pompadour Hills ranch; they have
three children, Ryan, Jacob, and Kylee. David lives
in Sully county, South Dakota; he has two children, Travis and Tate.
Changing of the guard
In 1982 a partnership was formed between Harold and his two sons.
In 1987 Harold had a serious stroke and retired from active
management of the the ranch. Operation of the ranch was taken over
by the boys. In 2003 in the partnership was dissolved;
Brady and Wendi
retained
ownership of the ranch headquarters and the Pompadour Hills name and brand.
Limousin cattle
From 1953 to 1969 the Rineharts raised Herefords. However
in 1969 they became interested in Limousin cattle, which were just then
being introduced into the United States from France. By 1977 they had
the largest herd of registered Limousin cattle in the state of South Dakota.
The Pompadour Hills ranch was named after Pompadour Prince, the first
Limousin bull exhibited in the United States. Harold purchased
Pompadour Prince semen for his own herd. The tradition has
continued into the next generation;
Brady and Wendi raise quality commercial
Limousin cattle.
Quarter horses
The Pompadour Hills Ranch is a working ranch used and still uses quarter
horses for work and pleasure
In the early 1960's Harold and family started seriously raising and breeding
quarter horses. In 1963 they began showing horses that they raised and used
in local horse shows. They
went to show horses at 4H horse shows and at AQHA horse shows.
Besides being shown at horse shows, Pompadour Hills horses were used
in 4H rodeos, high school rodeos, amateur
rodeos and PRCA rodeos.
Brady and Wendi started an AQHA lifetime membership in 1981. They
started raising, breeding, and selling quarter horses, and have been
ever since. Rinehart quarter horses have been sold by private treaty
and local select sales.
Rodeos
The Rinehart family has been active in cutting and rodeo. Brady roped
and steer wrestled. He had his PRCA card and made it to the SDRA finals
and the Bad Land circuit finals. He retired from active rodeo and took
up cutting. His son Ryan was the boys SD high school cutting horse
champion in 1994. Jacob won the boys SD high school cutting horse
championship in 2001. Jacob is in the top 30 steer wrestlers in the
PRCA. Their sister Kylee has been an SDRA finals qualifier in breakaway
roping. Barbara Rinehart's sons Todd and Randy Suhn are PRCA members
and PRCA national finalists. Todd made the finals ten years
consecutively.
